You decide to buy a weighted blanket, and you’ve checked out several options. But then, you realize you’ll have to clean and care for it to protect your investment.

But, how easy is it to clean a weighted blanket? That’s where using a removable duvet cover comes in, and makes the job that much easier.

The Benefits of Weighted Blankets with Covers

There’s a real problem with using weighted blankets that don’t come with a removable cover, and there are definite advantages to getting one.

The Problem

All that human contact can leave the blankets needing to be washed frequently. Weighted blankets are called “weighted” for a reason.

The added weight sewn into the material can weigh up to 25-30 pounds. That’s a lot of heaviness for you and your washer to handle without causing damage.

The problem becomes how to use a weighted blanket for the benefit of less anxiety and better sleep, without having it wear out too soon, or become a nuisance to take care of.

What Manufacturers Did

Many manufacturers have developed removable covers to help with the problem. These lightweight duvet covers are attached to the inner weighted blanket with ties and zippers.

They can be removed as often as needed and tossed in the wash for a quick freshen up of your weighted blanket. And, if they wear out, they’re generally easy to replace.

These washable covers are the perfect solution to keeping your weighted blanket investment looking and feeling good as new over the long term.

An Economical Solution

When a weighted blanket includes removable covers, the cost appears more expensive when compared to blankets sold without a cover included.

However, it saves having to buy the cover separately or replace the inner weighted blanket more often. Overall, it’s a more economical solution.

There are 2 top-rated weighted blankets with removable covers that we like. We’ve highlighted them below, with links to a more in depth post for your convenience:

2 Top Weighted Blankets with Removable Covers

After much research, and personal use of one of them, we decided that there are 2 top-rated and affordable weighted blankets that we feel are the best option for a weighted blanket with a removable cover.

1. The Degrees of Comfort Weighted Blanket

The Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket comes with not one, but two removable covers for greater economic value.

One cover is plush for extra warmth and the other is made with Coolmax technology for hot sleepers or warmer weather.

This is the weighted blanket that we chose for our son, who lives with anxiety, ADHD, and insomnia. We have a more detailed personal review for your added information:

Use a Weighted Blanket with a Cover for Easy Care

As we stated above, weighted blankets can be very heavy, with weights of up to 25-30 pounds. That’s a lot of weight to put in your washing and drying appliances.

To say nothing of the strain on your body dragging around that heavy weight when it’s wet. If you suffer from any kind of back issues or joint problems, it may be too much weight to deal with.

Convenience

Using a removable cover on your weighted blanket can be a convenient way to avoid having to clean the heavy inner blanket too often. You can remove the lighter outer covering and toss it in the washer and dryer when you need.

Protect Your Investment

An outer covering is an excellent way to protect your investment in a weighted sleep aid. This is especially important with the daily wear and tear of bed covers.

It’s also a great idea if people eat food in bed or if there are pets who normally get onto the beds in the home. And, it allows children to enjoy their use without having to be so cautious.

If you’re interested in protecting your investment of a weighted blanket, the choices highlighted above offer good products that include removable covers.

  1. Wow I never knew that these blankets existed. Sleep is so important and I should be better at researching things that help to aid sleeping. But I never would of thought of a blanket. Thanks for the in depth information on that. And when I purchase the Blankets I will be sure to purchase them with Removable Covers.

    How long do these blankets usually last in comparison to regular blankets?

    1. Hi Ceddy;

      That’s a good question. The thing about weighted blankets is they are like any other bedclothes and subject to the same daily wear and tear, so they’ll wear out at the same rate. That’s why it’s a good idea to purchase one that has a cover. And, to buy one from a manufacturer that believes in quality construction.

      It’s also a good idea to keep pets with their claws and chewing away from your weighted blanket, if at all possible.

      Weighted blankets may wear out the same, but they cost more than regular bed coverings, so it’s a good idea to use a cover to protect your investment.

      All the best with your sleep.

  2. I liked your website. I’ve never heard of weighted blankets before. What are they used for? You mentioned that they were used for anxiety and stress, but how does that work? I love blankets. Blankets are like my favorite thing in the world. There is nothing that beats a good blanket, so I’m curious about these weighted blankets. Thanks your site. 🙂

    1. Hi Marlo;

      Weighted blankets work on a principle of deep touch pressure, which means the weight in the blanket creates the same feeling as a firm hug. This pressure is shown to help produce more serotonin (the feel good hormone), which helps with less anxiety and better rest.

      We have an article that explains more about what a weighted blanket is for.

      Thanks for your question and all the best with your sleep and rest.

  3. Weighted blankets are something I’ve never tried, but it’s interesting to see that they help fight insomnia and promote further relaxation, something many of us can use more of in today’s fast-paced society. This holds especially true for those who might work later shifts and may find sleep and relaxation hard to come by. I’d rather go with the Degrees of Comfort due to its versatility plus multiple covers.

    1. Hi Todd;

      Yes, there are many reasons to give weighted blankets a try. They work well for many people when it comes to relaxation and better sleep.

      The Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket is also the same one that we chose for our son’s needs. You can read our personal review of it for more details.

      Best to you,
      Stella

  4. Hello Stella. I think that this type of blanket will make for ease when I want to buy mine. I am very happy that you have pointed out how to wash them by removing the cover. To be honest, I didn’t know that blankets like this one existed. One thing I find disturbing is the lack of diversity in colours for the blankets you shared. I want to know which you have used personally though.

    1. Hi Henderson;

      Yes, some weighted blankets have more color choice options than others. The blanket we chose for our son is the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket. You can read our personal review for more information.

      All the best,
      Stella

  5. Wow, this has really solved the problem I have had for quite a while now because I never thought that the weighted blanket could come any lighter and be easier to wash. I do not have a weighted blanket because I do not want to go through the hassle of having to wash it. I see the solution that you have pointed out here. Thank you very much for this. I would get one from one of these companies.
