We chose the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket for our son, who lives with ADHD, anxiety, and insomnia because it has great value and Coolmax technology for hot sleepers.

Weighted blankets are used by all age groups, including adults and children, with cautions for babies under one year and anyone without the strength to manipulate it on their own.

Degrees of Comfort Weighted Blanket Summary

The main reasons we went with Degrees of Comfort are:

  • It includes 2 removable duvet covers for options and easier care. (1 with Coolmax and 1 plush Minky)
  • It has an exclusive Coolmax partnership. (Making the cooling duvet great for hot sleepers like our son)
  • The weight is created with Nano-Ceramic Bead Technology. (Less noise and more durable)
  • There are 10 points for anchoring the covers. (More than many other brands)
  • The design is based on years of peer-reviewed research.
  • It is engineered with premium materials and Duralast Fiber Stitching. (Durable construction)

In a nutshell, the points above explain why we went with the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket for our son’s needs. It was an excellent choice that has been successful.

What Our Son Needed

Our son Matt lives with ADHD, anxiety, and insomnia. On top of that, he’s unfortunately what’s known as a “hot sleeper.” It’s someone who tends to sleep warm and sometimes wakes up sweating.

We Heard about Weighted Blanket Benefits

Having heard about the potential benefits of a weighted blanket for conditions like ADHD, PTSD, autism, insomnia, anxiety, and restless leg syndrome, we did our research to find one that met all of his needs and circumstances.

Our Main Concern for Matt

Our main concern for Matt was that heat buildup from the added weight would prevent him from being able to stay under the blanket and get the benefits of quality rest.

Weighted blankets don’t create too much heat for everyone, but it can happen to a hot sleeper, in particular.

An outdoor thermometer on a brick wall.

The Winner with Coolmax Technology

With this concern in mind, we knew we needed to find a good “cooling” weighted blanket.

We knew from our research that manufacturers were listening to customers and developing weight blankets that would reduce heat buildup during the night.

The Degrees of Comfort blanket turned out to be the winner, with its excellent value and Coolmax technology. When Matt uses his blanket, he benefits from better sleep and doesn’t overheat from the added weight.

During the warmer summer months, he adds a table fan to the mix, and it does the trick to allow him to stay under his blanket.

Degrees of Comfort Weighted Blanket Review

The Degrees of Comfort blanket ticks all the boxes for our son’s needs. It offers a large range of weight and size options for kids and adults, Coolmax technology, and the choice of warm or cooling removable covers.

Offers a Large Range of Size Options

This brand offers blankets as small as 5 pounds with 36 x 38-inch dimensions, up to the largest blanket at 30 pounds and 80 x 87-inch dimensions. So, you can see there is quite a range to suit all needs.

For our son, who is tall, but hadn’t used a weighted blanket before, we chose the 15-pound blanket in the 48 inches x 72 inches size.

It fits nicely on top of his double bed and covers him enough to feel an even distribution of the weight over his body.

Fit a Weighted Blanket to the Body, Not the Bed

This is an important point. For best results, a weighted blanket should only cover the body, and never hang down over the sides of the bed.

They are not meant to cover the bed like a regular blanket or duvet cover. They are meant to just cover the person’s body for best weight distribution.

There Can Be an Adjustment Period

Matt wasn’t used to sleeping under a weighted blanket, and at first, he found it odd to have less movement under the covers.

But after a few nights, he adjusted to that and started sleeping more deeply. It isn’t uncommon for people to take a few nights to adjust to it.

The Benefits of Deeper Sleep

Deeper sleep means he wakes feeling more energized and refreshed, allowing him to focus better and perform tasks with greater attention to detail.

That alone improves his quality of life and how he feels about himself as he moves through daily activities.

Sleeping more soundly, and getting more rest, plus the calming effect of the comforting weight has decreased his anxiety level.

And, of course, anything that helps with rest and anxiety is going to support better focus for someone living with ADHD.

In our opinion, the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket was the best choice for Matt’s needs and a good decision.

One Final Concern

The only thing that has been an issue from time to time is that, even with the Coolmax technology in the design, Matt often gets warmer than he prefers during the summer months.

He has always been a very warm sleeper, so we were initially concerned about that. But the cooling cover definitely works most of the time and makes a difference in reducing the heat build-up.

The solution for this issue is he uses a tabletop fan when he feels too warm. He aims it at his face and it seems to do the trick. Plus, he actually likes the white noise from the fan, and it seems to help with sleep, too.

More about Other Important Features

Let’s take a deeper look at some of the other excellent features of the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket. Besides the Coolmax technology and breathable material, it has a lot going for it.

Including Nano-Ceramic Beads for Weight

For weight, this blanket uses nano-ceramic beads, creating a more durable product with quality material.

Tougher than traditional glass or plastic beads, these beads are also softer and create a more comfortable nighttime experience for the sleeper.

Another point about nano-ceramic beads is their interaction property compared to other weight materials.

They are much smaller, which means they work together more smoothly, and this creates a more uniform weight distribution for a calming rest, without the weight shifting and causing lumps.

Less movement will mean less noise during the night if you turn over. Some people complain of a rustling noise with other weighted blankets. We didn’t find this to be a problem with this blanket.

A blue fleece blanket with folds in the material.

Uses a Multi-Point Anchoring System

Another impressive feature of the Degrees of Comfort blanket is the multi-point anchoring system for the weighted insert.

It features 10 places to tie the outer cover to the inner blanket, which is more than what is traditionally offered with other blankets.

It prevents shifting of the inner blanket and clumping. Matt finds the blanket stays in place well and doesn’t bunch into uncomfortable shapes during the night.

Includes 2 Removable Duvet Covers for Easier Care

A big plus is the inclusion of two covers, one for cooling and one for warmth. With many traditional blankets, you have to buy the cover separately, and with others, if the cover is included, it is only reversible.

The Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket is usable all year round, in many different temperature conditions. Having the two removable covers makes maintenance easier and will protect your investment.

You can take the cover off and pop it in the wash without having to deal with the heavy weight of the inner blanket. It’s easy and convenient to wash and take care of the weighted blanket this way.

Cons

The main disadvantage of this blanket is the lack of design and color choices if you’re looking for something bright to match your decor. The colors available are bland, but they are neutral and will match most rooms.

New Patented Zoning Design by Degrees of Comfort

Degrees of Comfort also has an updated version of their weighted blanket that includes a new patented “Zoning” design.

Offers a Different Distribution of Weight

The claim of this blanket is that it distributes the weight differently than before to make it even more comfortable for hot sleepers.

With the patented  Zoning configuration, they say that 80% of the weight is distributed around the edges of the blanket. The claim is that this creates less pressure in the middle of the blanket, and it creates less heat buildup.

Many Other Features Remain the Same

Besides the Zoning design, this blanket has the same features as the original Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket, including the removable covers and Nano-ceramic beads for filling.

However, the color options are still limited and there are fewer sizes to choose from, with a selection of 6 pounds up to 23 pounds.

Is Even Weighted Distribution Lost?

While the Zoning product has a high rating from reviews, there is mention that some people find the new design defeats the purpose of how a weighted blanket is meant to work, with regards to even weight distribution.

While we love the results with the original Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket for our son’s needs, it remains to be seen if this new design is a success.

So far, some customers are reporting that having the weight around the perimeter gives them the comforting feeling of being “tucked in.”

However, there are other consumers who have said they don’t like the feeling of the weight shifting to the outer edges of the weighted blanket.

It seems that this is a unique design that speaks to the needs of some people while creating discomfort for others.

Degrees of Comfort Weighted Throw Blanket

Another product added to the Degrees of Comfort line is the weighted throw blanket. It has a soft comfy sherpa design that makes it great for snuggling under.

Sizes of the Weighted Throw

The weighted throw blanket is meant to be more portable, so it only comes in two dimension choices of 50 x 60 inches or 60 x 80 inches, and the weight choices are 10 or 15 pounds.

Standard and New Features

The weighted throw has many standard features of a Degrees of Comfort product, plus some new qualities:

  • It uses nano-ceramic beads for the weight.
  • It’s made with anti-static material to repel pet fur.
  • It guarantees no matting, pilling, or shrinkage.
  • It’s more portable for travel, in the car, on the couch, or on the bed.
  • It comes in a range of color choices.

Cons

One of the main drawbacks of using the Degrees of Comfort weighted throw is that it is spot clean only, and there were significant complaints about it leaking beads, even though it is constructed with the same Duralast fiber stitching as the other products.

  1. I came across one of these just the other day and was curious as I had never heard of them before.

    It sounds as though a lot of time and effort has gone into designing this particular blanket as it ticks all the boxes for you and your son.

    Anything that can offer a comfortable, longer and deeper sleep has to be a good option for many people with sleep problems being on the rise. Sleep is so important for health and as you say, enabling better focus during the day.

    Thank you, an interesting and informative post.

    I will share on social media for others to read.

    1. Hi Linda;

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. We’re glad you found value in the post. Yes, the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket is a great value and we like it a lot. Our son has found better sleep a great boost to how he functions in the daytime.

      Thanks, and all the best,
      Stella

  2. Me and my partner sleep together in bed and this cold season we need something like this to keep us warm. Since this is the first time I encountered something like this, I’d like to ask, what is the difference between an ordinary blanket and this one? I mean, why is it called weighted? Also, are there sizes that is good for a couple? I mean, a size that’s good for two persons in bed?

    1. Hi Gomer;

      Weighted blankets, as opposed to regular blankets, use weighted pressure to increase feelings of calmness, helping people to have less anxiety and sleep better. You can learn more in our post What is a Weighted Blanket For.

      Also, we have another post that related to your question about using a larger weighted blanket for couples. There are some pros and cons to that.

      Thanks for your interest, and all the best,
      Stella

  3. Love! Love! Love!  I appreciate the option to make the blanket cool or warm with the multi-point anchoring system.  This feature could aid an athlete in rest and recovery after a tough workout.  Cooling the body after an intense session helps to reduce the inflammation of the workout.  The warming feature and weightedness then would aid in bloodflow to flush muscle toxins to accelerate healing and recovery.  Interesting product!

    1. Hi Stacy;

      Thanks for your thoughts. That’s an interesting way to look at using a weighted blanket. While intended as a sleep aid, they certainly do have many applications for many different demographics.

      Best to you,
      Stella

  4. Concerning weight blankets, I have been reading about nano-ceramic beads and a comparison with those blankets that don’t have it and the difference in durability is substantial.

    I also like the inclusion of these two covers, one for cooling and one for warmth.

    I have already made up my mind. I’ll purchase this Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket.

  5. Hi Stella! I have similar conditions as your son Matt, and I’m impressed with all the features included in this Degrees of Comfort blanket. If it ticks all the boxes for your son’s needs, then it also does for me. I have also heard a bit about Coolmax technology, and it’s so cool! Good to know it’s also integrated into the Degrees of Comfort blanket.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Paolo.

      Good luck to you with getting better rest and sleep. If you use the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket, be sure to let us know how it works out for you.

      All the best,
      Stella

  6. A friend’s son has almost the same issues that your son does. It is a very good thing that you have pointed out that this one was able to help him with it. Looking at all the features of the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket, I can say that it is very durable and can give comfort too. This is such a good post that should be shared because more people will be able to understand the goodness  of the blanket. Nice one

  7. I find this very interesting how a blanket can help someone who suffers from ADHD, insomnia, and anxiety. I am also pleased that it is helping your son as no one should have to go through that.

    Personally, I have no experience with these conditions which I am very grateful for. I could only imagine what they have to endure.

    How does The Degrees of Comfort blanket compare to other blankets on the market?

    1. Hi Conor;

      We find that the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket falls in the middle range compared to other weighted blankets. It isn’t the most expensive, but it has more features than many blankets.

      We  found that it was best for our son’s particular needs and it seemed to be a good value to us.

      Thanks for your interest,
      Stella

  8. Just like your kid, there are other kids with special needs like this and it’s a nice thing to offer a solution to their problems. I personally have tried several kinds of weighted blanket and I must say most of them are usually made out of inferior fabrics which makes it unable to benefit me. The Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket seems like a good choice with it’s useful and interesting features. I’ll note it as a possibility to try out.

  9. Hello; are you saying that one Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket is good to go for a year? From your information, your son could have experienced a calmer lifestyle had he been treated with a blanket of such technology from earlier years. If you had known about the product! It is good that you produced this post that others with similar needs can find the solution.

    DorcasW

    1. Hi Dorcas;

      If you purchase a weighted blanket like the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket that comes with a removable cover (or purchase a cover separately), you’ll likely find that the blanket will stay in good shape and last a long time. Certainly much longer than a year. Of course, how long a weighted blanket lasts will depend on many factors, such as quality of materials and construction, who is using it, and how roughly it’s treated.

      However, using a weighted blanket with a removable cover means you don’t have to clean the weighted inner layer so often. You can just take off the cover and throw it in the wash. And, you should always read the manufacturer’s instructions for caring for your weighted blanket.

      Yes, we do wish we had known about weighted blankets and that they were more common when our son was younger. It would have been a great help for him.

      All the best,
      Stella

  10. I always try as much as possible to make sure I get enough sleep regardless of whatever season is. I think this weighted blanket would go a long way to make this happen. I like the results of your son’s experience. I’ll look into getting this Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket since you recommend it.

    1. Hi there;

      Yes, our son has gotten good benefits from sleeping with the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket. You may find the same, depending on what your specific needs are. Be sure to let us know how it works out for you.

      Best regards,
      Stella

  11. Wow, this is a very top of the game weighted blanket that has so much to offer. I like the fact that I can really enjoy the comfort that I will get from it. Truly, it is very nice. I must say that it is good that it worked for your son. I know a person who would like to buy this as well looking at how it can deal with some health-related issues.

    1. Hi John;

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes, our son has found benefits from using a weighted blanket and the cooling features in the Degrees of Comfort blanket were helpful because he’s a hot sleeper. We hope your friend does well with their issues.

      Best to you both,
      Stella

  12. Hey thank you for the awesome review!! This weighted cover looks and sounds amazimg! I have been looking for a good weighted blanket to help myself sleep better due to insomnia.  This one looks awesome because it has all the cooling layers to it! I also agree that the price is really good for what you get!

  13. Glad to hear the weighted blanket is helping your son. I wonder if it can help my wife who has frequent panic attacks.

    Are their any known side effects with sleeping with this blanket, since it is not made out of the usual cotton or wool material? I like the idea it comes with two covers, one for cooling and one for warmth.

    1. Hi Phil;

      For many people, weighted blankets have a calming effect, so one might very well be beneficial for your wife’s situation. When it comes to side effects and the materials, it will likely depend on whether you have a sensitivity to any of the material used. So that’s something to keep in mind or discuss with your doctor.

      All the best to you both,
      Stella

  14. I have been searching for a great weighted blanket to try and use as I have heard about the many benefits from them.  As you said the color options are not great at all but that shouldn’t matter if the quality of the blanket is there.

    One big concern that I have is when the blanket doesn’t have the covering on it can you wash it to keep it clean or will that hurt the weights in it.  I wouldn’t want to purchase one without knowing this and another cool thing about it that I never would have thought about is the deeper sleep that you can achieve with a weighted blanket.  This is a cool technology that I’m really interested in and hoping to get better sleep.

    Douglas

    1. Hi Douglas;

      Yes, weighted blankets help many people, our son included. As to washing one, the cover makes it easier because you can just take it off and throw it in the wash. Without a cover, you’ll have to wash the heavy inner weighted blanket, which can be difficult on your machine and you. The best thing to do is read the manufacturer’s recommendations carefully. You can also check out our post about how to care for a weighted blanket. It has lots of info and tips.

      We wish you well,
      Stella

  15. I have been told that I need to investigate and try a weighted blanket to get a night of better sleep by friends, so decided to do some research and see what all the fuss was about. After reading through your personal experiences for your son with the Degrees of Comfort Weighted Blanket, I am convinced.

    The same kinds of issues that your son deals with are ones I deal with, and as it has worked wonders for your son, I am confident that it will do the same for me. The features this one has means that I can rest a lot better and also not suffer from overheating.

    The Coolmax technology and the materials they use to produce the blanket tell me that I am getting a quality weighted blanket from a company that knows the business. I like that there are 10 points to anchor the weighted insert and the two covers you get too. The Degrees of Comfort Weighted Blanket is my choice for getting started, and I thank you for this detailed review and recommendation!

    1. Hi Dave;

      We’re glad you found this personal review of the Degrees of Comfort weighted blanket helpful. Yes, it’s been one of the tools that has helped our son with insomnia, anxiety, and overall stress levels.

      He’s a hot sleeper, so the Coolmax technology and choice of two covers are the main reasons we went with this option. In his case, it was the right decision.

      We wish you all the best with your sleep and rest, and do feel free to let us known how it works out for you,
      Stella

  16. A weighted blanket can help you to de-stress, relax, and relieve anxiety. It can help you fall asleep more quickly and sleep better over the course of the night. But it can’t do ALL the work of a good night’s rest. … Not eating too heavily at night and close to bedtime. The Best Weighted Blanket, Based on Your Sleeping Style. … As a result, sleepers may feel more relaxed, and weighted blankets have even been shown to reduce stress. The deep touch pressure offered by the blanket is supposed to make you feel safe, relaxed, and comfortable.

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Ruby. Yes, there are lots of things people can do to help them get good sleep and rest.

      Stella

  17. Hi Stella,

    After reading your article here I can honestly say I’ve missed out on an amazing piece of technology! See, I’m also a Canadian that suffers from ADHD and High Anxiety, and sleeping at night has always been a challenge for me. And funny enough, I run quite hot at night too!

    So suffice to say that this article has resonated with me deeply. I’ve only heard of the weighted blankets just the other day, and now I have a lot more information to go on (thank you for that by the way). It may be a Christmas gift for myself if it is even half as awesome as it sounds.

    Cheers and thanks again, as a person with anxiety, information like this is a real life saver!

    1. Hello Tyson;

      We’re so glad you found this post helpful and we wish you all the best with your sleep and situation.

      Stella

  18. What an awesome idea!  I, too, live in Canada so the cooling/warming properties of this blanket would be perfect.  I also have anxiety and sleep issues and I can imagine that having this blanket over me would be like getting a permanent hug in bed!  I love the removable cover as this would make washing much easier.  I’m so glad I found this article – thank you!

    1. Hi there;
